ACNE A TEENAGER´S NIGHTMARE ---> By Petrina Braham [><][><][><][><][><]
Remember those moments when you envied your friend or even a stranger for her flawless skin, and gaped when she walked with such divine grace? I bet you thought she was born that way. Reality alert, she was not. The untold secrets will be yours when you read this article.

This series will look at proper care of the skin, good posture and tasteful dressing. In this issue we will begin with "The care of the skin".
~ <*> ~
Did you know that the skin is the largest organ of the human body? It serves as a coating which protects the body in a variety of ways. Such as protecting the underlying tissues from the damaging rays of the sun, regulating the body´s temperature and acts as a waterproof agent. It is also surrounded by numerous nerve endings making it the main organ for sensation.
~ <*> ~
The skin is made up of three layers of tissue; the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous layer which is the fatty tissue under the dermis.
~ <*> ~
The epidermis is the outermost or the cornified layer which consists mainly of dying cells, and a protein called keratin which fills up the cells making them hard and waterproof. It also contains keratohyaline and cells producing a brown pigment called melanin. Skins may vary in colour due to the amount of meladin produced in the skin, which is formed by the melanocytes in the epidermis.
All races have the same amount of melanocytes, however the darker the skin the more meladin produced. Meladin production is determined by genetic and therefore hereditary.

The dermis is mainly made up of blood vessels, nerve endings and connective tissue. The blood vessels nourish both the dermis and the epidermis.

There are two kinds of glands in the skin, sebaceous and sweat glands. Sebaceous glands empty into hair follicles, secreting a oil or sebum, which lubricates the hair and the surface of the skin. While the sweat glands produce two kinds of sweat one that cools the surface of the skin and the other has no function. Sweat is odorless until broken down by bacteria on the surface of the skin.

...........................................................Flawless skin is a source of envy for many ......................................................... SKIN DISORDERS --------------- There are many disorders of the skin, some of the most common ones are; Pimples, freckles, liverspots, acne and rashes.
These are manifested for various reasons. But let us look at the one that most of us call ´teenage bumps´. Acne does not affect just teenagers, it affects almost anyone. ´Acne is hereditary´. It is brought about by male harmones that is why men´s acne is much more severe than women.
~ <*> ~
Acne is caused by inflammation of the sebaceous glands. This usually begins at puberty. This inflammation is caused by the over activity of the sebaceous glands. Thus, the hair follicles becomes blocked by keratin and a pustule plug forms hindering the escape of the sebum. The keratin turns black because of this, giving us the familiar blackhead.

´´Acne is an uncurrable disease.´´ said Dr. Michael Fitz-Henley, a well known dermatologist. ´´It is however a controllable condition, and this can be done 95% of the time. The acne however, will return if treatment is not maintained.""
~ <*> ~
Minor acne can be treated with acne medication sold over the counter, while for the severe cases one may have to get prescriptions from the doctors or go to the dermatologists for treatment.

.............................. Move against gravity when washing your face, applying moisturizers foundation and other products .............................. The first step in caring for the skin is a healthy life style. This means having a balanced diet, with all the
essential nutrients especially fresh fruits and vegetables. No smoking....this ages the skin. No alcohol, no hard drugs.
~ <*> ~
The next step is to protect it from harmful elements, like the sun. When over exposed especially with fair skinned persons it can cause severe sun burn, skin cancer, freckles and aging. Melanin absorbs the harmful ultra violet rays from the sun which can harm the delicate tissues under the cornified layer.
~ <*> ~
Keeping the skin clean means clearer pores and cleaner bumps. But first you must consider your skin type-oily, dry or normal. An oily skinned person may use an astringent, dry skin may use moisturing products and normal may use normal skin care products.

Never go to bed with make up. Quick to a name
